Egypt Signs Agreements With France to Improve Transport and Energy During Regional Unrest

Egypt and France signed several agreements on Monday in areas like transport, technology, and energy. These deals aim to support Egypt’s stability during a time of rising tensions in the region.

Sisi Meets Macron

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with French President Emmanuel Macron, who is visiting Cairo for three days. They talked about working together more closely and supporting each other.

They discussed improving Egypt’s railway system, training workers in technical skills, using artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity, and making green hydrogen.

Both leaders also talked about growing cooperation in important areas, especially encouraging more French businesses to invest in Egypt.

“We agreed on the importance of getting more French companies to work in the Egyptian economy,” said El-Sisi.

Egypt’s Stability

El-Sisi said both countries stressed the need to help Egypt fight illegal migration. Egypt is already hosting more than 9 million refugees.

He also thanked France for its strong support. France helped Egypt get the second part of a $4.4 billion (€4 billion) financial aid package from the European Union.

Macron said France is committed to helping Egypt with its economic problems, especially given the challenges in the region.

At a joint press conference in Cairo, Macron said France supports Egypt’s talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Commission. The IMF recently gave Egypt $1.2 billion to help with high inflation and a lack of foreign currency.

Macron also said that France’s development agency will soon sign deals worth about $284.5 million (€260 million) in loans and grants. This money will support projects in transport, health, water, and energy.

Gaza Ceasefire

El-Sisi and Macron both called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. They said this is important to allow aid to reach people and to help release hostages.

While in Cairo, Macron also joined a phone call with US President Donald Trump, El-Sisi, and Jordan’s King Abdullah II to talk about the Gaza crisis, according to the French presidency.
