Saudi Arabia and Kuwait Say They Found Oil in Shared Border Area
Saudi Arabia and Kuwait said on Monday that they found new oil in the Partitioned Zone. This is the first time they found oil there since they started working again in mid-2020, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
New Oil Discovery
The new oil find happened in the North Wafra Wara-Burgan field, which is 5 kilometers north of the Wafra field, said the state-run SPA in a report.
The report said this discovery is very important because it helps both countries show they are strong and reliable energy suppliers. It also shows their skills in finding and producing oil.
This discovery is part of a joint project between the two governments called Wafra Joint Operations.
It is the first oil find since work started again in mid-2020 in the Partitioned Zone, a shared border area between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, and nearby offshore areas.
Partitioned Zone
In 2019, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia agreed to share oil production in the neutral zone between their countries.
This zone has two main oil fields: the Wafra field on land and the Khafji field offshore.
Both fields stopped production in 2014 and 2015 but started working again in July 2020.
Oil Revenues
Saudi Arabia’s money from oil dropped by 18% compared to last year, reaching $39.94 billion in the first three months of 2025.
Lower oil prices and choosing to produce less oil have lowered Saudi Arabia’s income. Still, the country keeps investing in big projects under Vision 2030, a plan to grow other parts of the economy and rely less on oil.
Saudi oil exports went down by 8.4% in the first quarter of 2025, and oil made up 71.8% of total exports, down from 75.9% the year before.
