Iran Says There Was No Attack on Isfahan Refinery, Operations Are Normal: Report
Iran’s oil ministry said on Sunday that the Isfahan refinery is working normally and there was no incident or attack, according to state media reported by Reuters.
The Isfahan refinery is one of the biggest in Iran and produces the most variety of petroleum products in the country.
Refining Operations
Israel’s Oil Refineries Ltd. said on Sunday that some of its pipelines and systems in Haifa were damaged by Iranian missile attacks. This was reported in a regulatory filing to the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. The company confirmed that no one was hurt or killed.
Refining work is still going on, but some other related activities have been paused for now. The company is checking how the damage might affect its operations and finances.
These events happened during new missile strikes between Israel and Iran that continued through Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Market Reaction
Oil prices stayed high due to fears about Middle East supply issues. US Brent crude rose over 7%—about $5—to $74.23 per barrel.
Gold also increased by 1.6%, reaching $3,433 per ounce, as investors looked for safer options because of rising tensions.
Stock markets in Tel Aviv fell when they opened on Sunday for the first time since the missile attacks started on Friday. The TA-35 index dropped 1.5%, and the TA-125 fell 1.4%.
Israel and Iran exchanged more strikes overnight for the second day in a row.
Airspace Closures
Etihad Airways said on Sunday that it has canceled flights between Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv until June 22. The airline warned that more delays may happen in the coming days.
Jordan reopened its airspace on Saturday after briefly closing it due to the rising tensions. Many international airlines are still avoiding flying over Iran and Israel.
EgyptAir also canceled flights to Beirut and several Iraqi cities, such as Baghdad and Erbil, due to safety concerns.
Nuclear Talks Suspended
On Saturday, Iran stopped nuclear talks that the U.S. had called the only way to stop Israel’s attacks.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that what Iran has faced so far is “nothing” compared to what might come next.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, warning Iran that if it attacks the U.S., the response will be powerful. He also said a peace deal between Iran and Israel is possible but didn’t give any details.
An Israeli military spokesperson warned Iranians near nuclear sites to leave those areas immediately, saying they could be targeted.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran does not want to expand the conflict to nearby countries unless it is forced to. He said Iran is acting in self-defense.
Iran also warned Israel’s allies that their military bases in the region could be attacked if they help shoot down Iranian missiles.
Key Background
Israel sees Iran’s nuclear program as a serious threat and says its airstrikes are meant to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons.
Iran says its nuclear program is peaceful and that it doesn’t plan to build a bomb.
However, the International Atomic Energy Agency says Iran is not fully following the rules of the global nuclear agreement.
