Qatar Stops Flights Due to Iran’s Threats After US Attacks Nuclear Sites

Qatar said on Monday that it has temporarily stopped flights in its airspace because of threats from Iran. These threats came after the US attacked Iran’s nuclear sites. Qatar’s foreign ministry said this step was taken as a safety measure due to what’s happening in the region.

Qatar is home to Al Udeid Air Base, which is an important center for US military activities in the Middle East.

Airlines Change Middle East Flight Plans Due to Iran-Israel Tensions

Airlines around the world are changing or canceling flights to the Middle East because of growing conflict between Iran and Israel. This comes after the U.S. carried out airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, and Iran promised to strike back.

Since Israel began airstrikes on Iran on June 13, the skies in the region have mostly been empty. Airlines are avoiding the area due to safety concerns and airspace closures.

Another worry is fake location signals and GPS issues near the conflict zones. Flight-tracking site Flightradar24 said there has been a sharp rise in GPS jamming and fake signals over the Persian Gulf, according to Reuters.

Airspace in the Middle East is especially important now for flights between Europe and Asia, since Russian and Ukrainian skies are closed.

Many airlines are avoiding airports in the UAE and Qatar, and to a smaller extent in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. They fear that Iran or its allies might launch missile or drone attacks at U.S. military bases in these countries, says aviation risk company Osprey Flight Solutions.

Flight Cancellations

  • Finnair canceled flights to Doha until June 30.

  • Singapore Airlines canceled flights to Dubai through Tuesday.

  • Air France KLM, Iberia, British Airways, and Air Astana canceled flights to Doha or Dubai on Sunday and Monday.

  • Air France also stopped flying to Riyadh and paused flights to Beirut until Wednesday.

An Iberia spokesperson said decisions on future flights haven’t been made yet.

Background

On June 13, major airlines like Emirates, Lufthansa, and Air India stopped or changed their flight routes after Israel attacked Iran’s nuclear sites. This led to the closure of Iran’s airspace, along with Iraq and Syria’s, causing big travel delays and forcing many flights to take longer routes.
