ADFD and GCCIA Sign $205 Million Deal to Strengthen Power Grid Connection with UAE

The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has signed a $205 million (AED 752 million) deal with the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA). The goal is to improve energy security and support electricity sharing between the UAE and other Gulf countries.

About the Project

The agreement will help expand the power grid that connects the UAE with other GCC countries. A new 400-kilovolt (kV) double-circuit overhead power line will be built. It will be 96 kilometers long and connect Al Silaa station in the UAE with Salwa station in Saudi Arabia.

The project will also upgrade three important power stations: Gonan, Al Silaa, and Salwa. New equipment like switchgears, circuit breakers, and reactors will be added. It will also include advanced systems to protect and control the power grid, making it more reliable and efficient.

This project supports the UAE Energy Security 2050 plan, which aims to create a strong and sustainable energy system that helps the economy grow over the long term.

Who Signed the Deal

The agreement was signed at ADFD’s headquarters by ADFD Director General Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi and GCCIA CEO Ahmed Ali Al Ebrahim.

What They Said

Al Suwaidi said this project is a good example of regional energy cooperation. It will make the power grid stronger, improve emergency response, and help add renewable energy to the network. It also supports the region’s goals to cut emissions and go green.

Al Ebrahim added that this is the first step in a larger plan. More connections are being developed with Kuwait, Oman, and southern Iraq, with total investments of over $1 billion.
