Damascus International Fair Returns with Strong Participation

The Damascus International Fair has opened again for its 62nd edition under the slogan “Syria Welcomes the World.” Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa led the inauguration, with Saudi Arabia chosen as the guest of honor.

This is the first fair since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government last year, after many years of suspension.

During the opening, President Al-Sharaa said Syria will work to boost farming and industry and to help displaced people and refugees return home. Since taking office in December, his government has raised wages and salaries and changed investment laws to encourage both local and foreign investors.

Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Minister of Investment, Abdullah Aldubaikhi, said the fair is not only about business but also about showing Syria’s new spirit. Turkey’s Trade Minister Ömer Bolat said rebuilding Syria is a key goal for Turkey, while Saudi businessman Essam Al Muhaidib called the event a “message of hope” for the future.

The fair director, Mohamed Hamza, said this year’s edition is especially important as the first since Syria’s “liberation.” He noted that exhibition halls, pavilions, and a children’s stage are ready, and security plans are in place.

Saudi Role

Saudi Arabia is strongly involved, sending an official delegation from the Ministries of Energy and Investment, the Saudi Export Development Authority, the Saudi-Syrian Business Council, and over 80 companies. A Saudi delegation also visited Damascus earlier this month, leading to investment agreements worth over $6.4 billion in real estate, energy, industry, tourism, and healthcare.

Damascus hopes these Saudi investments will help rebuild its economy after 14 years of conflict.

Background

The Damascus International Fair began in 1954 and was held every year until the conflict disrupted it. The last edition took place in 2019 before being paused by the pandemic.

This year, the fair hosts nearly 800 companies from Syria, the Arab world, and abroad. Countries taking part include Qatar, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Sudan, South Africa, Belgium, and more. The event covers 95,000 square meters and will run until September 5, featuring business, cultural, and artistic programs.
