Iraq, Kuwait Move Forward in Talks on Shared Oil Fields
Iraq and Kuwait have made progress in talks about investing together in oil fields along their border, Iraqi Oil Minister Hayan Abdul-Ghani Al-Sawad said on Thursday.
Al-Sawad, who is also Iraq’s deputy prime minister for energy, met with a Kuwaiti team from the Joint Border Oil Fields Committee, according to the Iraqi News Agency.
He said the talks focused on boosting cooperation in joint oil projects and stressed Iraq’s commitment to stronger ties with Kuwait. He added that both sides had made “significant progress” toward an agreement to develop the fields and use gas for power generation.
The Kuwaiti side was led by Oil Ministry Undersecretary Khaled Waleed Al-Din, with officials from the Oil Ministry, Kuwait Oil Company, and Foreign Ministry. Al-Din said the talks were positive and highlighted the importance of continued cooperation.
Other Iraqi oil deals
Last week, Iraq signed an agreement with US oil giant Chevron to develop the Nassiriya project, which includes four exploration blocks and other oil fields. Chevron Vice President Frank Mount said the company was eager to work in Iraq, calling it a country full of resources and opportunities.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said Iraq is following a new strategy to attract major global oil companies, especially from the US.
Iraq-Kuwait economic ties
Earlier in February, Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid met with Kuwaiti Ambassador Hassan Mohammed Al-Zaman to discuss economic cooperation. Rashid confirmed Iraq’s commitment to stronger ties and new investments, while Al-Zaman said Kuwait wants to expand cooperation in different sectors.
