ADFD Joins UAE Team in Lebanon, Meets Leaders to Talk About Working Together on Economic Projects

The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) went with the official UAE group on a three-day trip to Lebanon to look for ways to work together on development and economic projects.

ADFD visits Lebanon

During the visit, ADFD officials met with Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. They also met other ministers from finance, energy, education, health, and telecommunications.

The ADFD team talked with the Central Bank of Lebanon, the Higher Relief Council, and the Council for Development and Reconstruction. They worked to find important projects to focus on.

This visit came after talks in May between the UAE’s President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and President Aoun about working together more on the economy, investments, and government.

ADFD looked at possible projects in infrastructure, education, energy, and healthcare. They also met with Lebanon’s housing bank to talk about offering loans with low interest for homes. Both sides agreed to keep talking in Abu Dhabi to plan the projects.

The UAE’s knowledge exchange office met Lebanese officials in Beirut to share ideas on how to improve government work. The visitors also saw the Port of Beirut, the international airport, a public hospital, and other government places to understand Lebanon’s needs and how they can help.

Background

Earlier this month, President Aoun visited Abu Dhabi to meet the UAE’s President and improve economic and diplomatic ties.

After that visit, the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it would end the travel ban on UAE citizens going to Lebanon, starting May 7. Both countries agreed to make travel easier and improve diplomatic relations after years of tension.

This change shows the UAE’s new approach toward Lebanon, which has had difficult relations with Gulf countries in the past because of Hezbollah’s influence.

The two leaders also agreed to create a UAE-Lebanon Business Council to boost trade and investment. In January, the UAE reopened its embassy in Lebanon, moving toward better relations.

Key numbers

In the first two months of 2025, the UAE sent about $132 million worth of goods to Lebanon, while Lebanon sent $69 million worth of goods to the UAE.
