Egypt’s Annual Inflation Drops to 13.1% in July as Food Prices Fall

Egypt’s annual inflation slowed to 13.1% in July, down from 14.4% in June, mainly because food and drink prices went down, according to official data released on Sunday.

July inflation details

Food and drink prices, which make up the biggest part of Egypt’s inflation index, fell 3.1% from June to July but were still 3% higher than in July last year, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) reported.

Over the past year:

  • Meat and poultry prices dropped 1.3%

  • Vegetable prices fell sharply by 15.4%

  • Cereals and bread rose 4.3%

  • Fish and seafood increased 11.3%

  • Dairy, cheese, and eggs went up 4.6%

Other price changes compared to last year:

  • Clothing and shoes: up 14.6%

  • Housing, utilities, gas, and fuel: up 20.4%

  • Furniture and home maintenance: up 11.1%

  • Healthcare: up 37.7%

  • Transport and communication: up 34.8%

  • Telecommunications: up 11.2%

  • Culture and entertainment: up 20.3%

  • Education: up 10%

  • Restaurants and hotels: up 15.1%

Egypt has been working to reduce inflation, which reached a record 38% in September 2023.

Central Bank policy

In July 2025, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) kept interest rates the same after cutting them twice earlier this year. The bank said current rates are suitable to keep inflation on a downward trend.

Foreign reserves and trade

The CBE announced that Egypt’s net foreign reserves reached $49 billion at the end of July, up 0.6% from June—the highest in years. Reserves have grown by $1.2 billion since May.

Egypt’s trade deficit fell 17.8% in May to $3.4 billion. Exports rose 4.6% to $4.25 billion, while imports dropped 6.7% to $7.7 billion.
