Jordan and Syria Restart Water Talks, Plan to Work Together on Shared Resources

Jordan and Syria have resumed talks to work together on water issues. On Tuesday, officials from both countries met at the Al-Wehda Dam, a major water reservoir that they share, to discuss how to divide water fairly and plan future projects.

The meeting was led by Hisham Haisa from Jordan and Osama Abu Zaid from Syria. They talked about sharing water from the Yarmouk River and working together on things like building infrastructure and using better data systems.

Both sides agreed on the need to share water fairly and to develop the Yarmouk Basin together, according to a statement from Jordan’s Ministry of Water. They also talked about using cloud seeding, building shared water systems, and using technology to monitor water sources remotely.

Syria also said it might be able to give Jordan extra water this summer if it has enough in reserve. The Syrian delegation also visited a modern control center in Jordan and showed interest in using similar technology back home.

Energy Talks

Last week, Jordan’s energy ministry also met with Syria’s oil minister to talk about working together on energy projects. They agreed to set up teams to visit each other’s countries and check the situation on the ground for electricity, oil, gas, and renewable energy.

They also held talks with private companies about working together in areas like power distribution, solar energy, and oil and gas. Jordan shared its energy rules and offered technical help to support Syria’s energy sector.

Syrian officials met with Jordanian renewable energy companies to discuss possible investments, and Jordanian companies showed interest in taking part in future projects.

What’s Next

Jordan and Syria plan to hold another meeting next week in Damascus to continue the water talks and settle any remaining issues.
