Kuwait plans to get 50% of its energy from renewable sources by 2050, says the minister
Kuwait plans to use 50% renewable energy by 2050, according to the Minister of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy, Sabeeh Al-Mukhaizeem, as reported by the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Sunday.
Renewable Energy Goals
Al-Mukhaizeem stressed the importance of investing in renewable energy to address global environmental and economic challenges. He said it is crucial for Kuwait’s future and mentioned the country’s efforts to develop clean energy projects. He also called for regional and international partnerships to speed up progress in renewable energy.
The minister encouraged global cooperation and sharing knowledge to find better solutions for cleaner energy.
He also shared plans to start the Shagaya power project later this year. This project aims to produce up to 4,800 megawatts, which is about 26-27% of Kuwait’s total electricity. The project will be done in phases, with some parts developed with the Public-Private Partnership Authority and others with China.
Al-Mukhaizeem hopes the Shagaya project will be ready by 2028, though financial details are still being reviewed.
In March, Kuwait signed an agreement with China to develop renewable energy projects with a total capacity of around 3,500 megawatts. Chinese officials recently arrived in Kuwait and will visit the project site.
The minister made these comments at the Kuwait Sustainable Energy Conference, held from May 11 to 13. This event also marks Kuwait hosting the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), which Al-Mukhaizeem sees as a sign of international trust in Kuwait’s renewable energy abilities.
Kuwait’s Energy Sector
Last month, Kuwait’s National Petroleum Company (KNPC) started merging with Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC) as part of a major change in the oil sector. KNPC CEO and acting KIPIC CEO Wadha Al-Khatib said the merger is aimed at improving efficiency and streamlining operations in Kuwait’s oil industry. She added that the fast-changing global oil and gas industries require Kuwait’s energy companies to adjust quickly and improve their performance.
The merger will combine the companies’ operations, increase their capabilities, and help achieve Kuwait’s energy goals and support its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Big Number
By the end of 2024, Kuwait’s crude oil production capacity will exceed three million barrels per day (bpd), according to Sheikh Nawaf Saud Al-Sabah, CEO of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC). Sheikh Nawaf said in January that Kuwait aims to reach a production capacity of four million bpd by 2035.
