Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Introduces ‘Architecture Characters Map

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has introduced the Saudi Architecture Characters Map to protect and update the country’s unique architectural style.

Protecting Saudi Heritage

A new project has been launched to highlight 19 unique architectural styles based on Saudi Arabia’s different regions and cultures, according to a report by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Monday.

The plan, called Saudi Architecture, will be rolled out in stages. The first stage will focus on four cities: Al-Ahsa, Taif, Makkah, and Abha. This stage will give priority to large projects, government buildings, and business structures, SPA said.

The project includes flexible rules for developers, allowing them to use modern materials without extra costs. Each of the 19 styles offers three design options—traditional, transitional, and modern—encouraging creativity while keeping the local architectural identity.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said that Saudi Architecture will help grow the economy by making Saudi cities more appealing and sustainable for tourists and visitors. This will boost industries like tourism, hotels, and construction.

This project is part of Saudi Arabia’s larger Vision 2030 plan, which aims to improve living standards and develop urban areas.

Key Figures

  • $2.1 billion (SAR 8 billion): The amount the Saudi Architecture project is expected to add to the country’s economy by 2030.
  • 34,000: The number of direct and indirect jobs it will create in engineering, construction, and urban development.

Important Quote

“Saudi Architecture combines our rich history with modern design,” said the Crown Prince, who is also the Prime Minister and head of the architectural design committee.

“We are improving cities, making life better, and creating a design style that respects both our past and present.”

Architecture Styles

The Saudi Architecture Characters Map features styles influenced by the kingdom’s land, environment, and cultural traditions, based on old city and building designs.

Some styles include:

  • Central Najdi
  • Northern Najdi
  • Tabuk Coast
  • Hejazi Coast
  • Taif Highlands

According to SPA, the project is being developed through teamwork between government departments, engineering companies, and real estate developers. Design studios will provide rules, training, and skill programs to ensure the buildings are high quality and sustainable.
