UAE’s Masdar Signs Agreements To Advance Floating Solar Power Projects In Indonesia

Masdar, a clean energy company based in Abu Dhabi, has signed two agreements with Indonesia’s state-owned utility company PT PLN (Persero) to develop floating solar power projects in the country, as announced in a statement on Friday.

Solar Power Projects in Indonesia

Masdar will build a floating solar power plant at the Jatigede Dam reservoir in West Java and explore expanding its Cirata floating solar plant. This will help Masdar grow its renewable energy presence in Southeast Asia’s biggest energy market.

Construction of the floating solar plant at Jatigede Dam will start this year, with completion expected by 2017.

The Cirata floating solar plant, with a capacity of 145MWac, began its first phase in November 2023. It currently provides enough clean energy for 50,000 homes and reduces 214,000 tons of carbon emissions each year.

The project was boosted by new rules allowing more water surface area for renewable energy projects. In response, Masdar and PLN signed a deal in 2023 to explore expanding Cirata. The feasibility studies were successful, leading to the latest agreement.

Masdar Projects

Masdar has secured funding for six projects, including the 1.1 GW Al Henakiyah Solar Power Plant and the AMAALA sustainable project in Saudi Arabia, as well as the 760 MW Bilasuvar and Neftchala solar projects in Azerbaijan.

The company also strengthened its presence in the region by signing a Power Purchase Agreement in December 2024 for the 2 GW Sadawi project in Saudi Arabia. It also opened the 500 MW Zarafshan Wind Farm in Uzbekistan, now the largest renewable energy project in Central Asia.

In May 2024, Masdar and its partners signed an agreement with the Egyptian government for a 10 GW onshore wind farm in Egypt, valued at over $10 billion. This agreement gives them access to 3,025 square kilometers of land in West Suhag.

In 2024, Masdar focused on solar, wind, and energy storage projects, aiming to expand in fast-growing markets.

Key Background

Masdar’s global renewable energy portfolio grew from 20 GW in 2022 to 51 GW by the end of 2024, a 150% increase. Active in over 40 countries, Masdar aims for 100 GW of renewable energy capacity and plans to become a major global producer of green hydrogen by 2030.
